Honest Dog Breeder Certification Standards

Learn the standards required to maintain status as a Certified Honest Dog Breeder and what you can expect as a buyer purchasing from an Honest Dog Breeder.

Certified Honest Dog Breeder Standards

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to breed, raise, place, and support dogs with intention and integrity.

Certification does not mean every breeder operates the same way. Breeds, bloodlines, facilities, climates, family structures, goals, and puppy-raising methods may differ. These standards are not meant to create one rigid model of dog breeding.

Instead, they define the shared responsibilities of an Honest Dog Breeder: to prioritize the long-term well-being of the dogs they produce, the families who receive them, and the sustainability of the breeding program.

An Honest Dog Breeder does not simply produce puppies. They take responsibility for the lives those puppies are likely to live.

1. Health Testing & Breeding Decisions

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to complete appropriate health testing for their breed, bloodline, and breeding goals.

Breeders agree to define program health standards for their breeding dogs and use health testing as a meaningful tool in their breeding decisions, not simply as a marketing phrase.

Dogs selected for breeding must meet those program health standards. Any exceptions must be intentional, well understood, and made with the long-term health and quality of the dogs in mind.

Breeders agree not to knowingly breed dogs with serious hereditary health issues, unstable temperaments, or structural problems that would compromise the dog’s quality of life or the quality of life of the puppies they produce.

Breeding decisions must consider health, temperament, structure, function, genetic diversity, family suitability, and the long-term goals of the bloodline.

2. Reproductive Responsibility

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to make reproductive decisions based on the individual dog’s health, condition, age, recovery, temperament, reproductive history, and long-term quality of life.

For healthy females who recover well, maintain excellent condition, and are thriving physically and emotionally, breeding on consecutive heat cycles is generally considered standard reproductive management.

Breeding timing must be determined by the individual dog’s condition and reproductive health, not by assumptions based on human reproductive cycles. Dogs do not have menstrual cycles like humans, and unused heat cycles can create unnecessary reproductive health risks.

An Honest Dog Breeder evaluates the individual dog in front of them and makes breeding, timing, and retirement decisions with her well-being as the priority.

3. Daily Care & Quality of Life

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to provide all dogs with clean shelter, safe containment, fresh water, appropriate food, social interaction, enrichment, and room to move, play, and behave like dogs.

Dogs have a right to daily positive human interaction and enrichment that meets their drives, temperament, and needs.

Breeders agree not to keep dogs in chronic filth, isolation, fear, neglect, or preventable discomfort.

Breeders agree to maintain routines, facilities, and management systems that protect the physical and emotional well-being of the dogs in their care.

This includes appropriate sanitation, safe housing, protection from extreme weather, regular observation, parasite management, grooming or coat care when needed, and timely attention to injuries, illness, or changes in behavior.

An Honest Dog Breeder agrees not to allow a dog to suffer unnecessarily. When a dog needs veterinary care, comfort, management changes, or humane intervention, the breeder takes appropriate action.

4. Puppy Raising & Development

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to raise puppies with intention.

Puppies must be raised in a way that supports physical health, emotional stability, age-appropriate confidence, and a smooth transition into their anticipated life.

Breeders agree to provide puppies with appropriate sanitation, nutrition, parasite management, safe handling, age-appropriate socialization, and observation of their development.

An Honest Dog Breeder agrees to have an intentional puppy-raising process built for the breed, bloodline, and anticipated life the puppies will live.

5. Puppy Health, Vaccines, Records & Health Guarantee

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to provide age-appropriate health care for puppies before placement.

Puppies must receive appropriate vaccinations, parasite prevention or management, nutrition, sanitation, and care based on their age, risk level, and the breeder’s management system.

Breeders agree to seek veterinary care when a puppy needs it.

Puppies must be microchipped before placement.

Breeders agree to provide buyers with clear records, which include vaccination records, parasite management, feeding instructions, microchip information, registration or pedigree information if applicable, and any known health concerns.

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to provide a written health guarantee with a minimum of two years of coverage for hips, elbows, and breed-specific genetic health conditions as recommended or listed by the relevant breed club.

If a puppy has a known or suspected inherited health condition, that information must be disclosed to the buyer before placement.

If a breeding creates a known risk of affected puppies for an inherited genetic condition, breeders agree to test the puppies when testing is available and disclose the results to buyers before placement.

If a buyer has placed a deposit and the puppy becomes known to have an inherited health condition or affected genetic status that was not disclosed at the time of deposit, the buyer must be allowed to transfer the deposit to another suitable puppy or receive a full refund if no suitable puppy is available.

6. Buyer Education & Lifestyle Matching

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to educate buyers honestly about the breed, bloodline, and individual dogs they produce.

This includes strengths, challenges, energy level, grooming needs, temperament tendencies, training needs, health considerations, household fit, and the kind of lifestyle where the dog is most likely to thrive.

Breeders agree to make reasonable efforts to place puppies with homes that are prepared for the dog they are receiving.

The breeder agrees to conduct the match to the best of their ability to support the long-term best outcome for both the puppy and the puppy owner.

7. Contracts, Transparency & Process

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to use a written contract.

The contract must be available for review before the buyer places a deposit or makes a financial commitment.

Breeders agree to clearly communicate important process details, including price, deposit terms, refund or transfer policies, health guarantee, spay/neuter or breeding rights terms, pickup or transport expectations, timeline, waitlist process, and what happens if the buyer can no longer keep the dog.

8. Lifetime Responsibility

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to remain a safety net for the dogs they produce.

If a buyer can no longer keep a dog, the breeder agrees to take the dog back or assist in rehoming the dog, at any age and in any condition, without shame, punishment, or unnecessary barriers.

The practical details may vary depending on location, timing, health, transport, and circumstances, but the responsibility remains: dogs produced by an Honest Dog Breeder should never knowingly end up in shelters, rescues, auctions, or unsafe placements when the breeder can reasonably intervene.

9. Honest Marketing & Representation

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to represent their dogs, puppies, program, pricing, health testing, registration, temperament, and breeding goals honestly.

Breeders agree not to use deceptive marketing, false scarcity, stolen photos, fake reviews, misleading claims, or exaggerated promises.

Breeders agree to be clear about what they do, what they do not do, what buyers can expect, and what kind of homes their dogs are best suited for.

For service dogs, working dogs, emotional support prospects, therapy prospects, or other specialized placements, breeders agree not to guarantee outcomes they cannot ethically guarantee. They agree to clearly explain the difference between breeding potential, early training, formal task training, temperament suitability, and long-term success.

10. Record Keeping & Accountability

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to keep appropriate records for their breeding program.

This may include health testing, pedigrees, breeding dates, whelping information, litter details, puppy care, vaccines, parasite management, buyer contracts, puppy placements, returns, rehomes, and health or temperament issues that show up later.

The record-keeping system must be reliable enough for the breeder to understand what happened, identify patterns, support buyers, and make informed decisions over time.

11. Ethical Business Practices

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to conduct business in a way that is honest, clear, and fair.

Breeders agree not to misrepresent puppies bred by others as their own.

If a breeder places, raises, co-breeds, imports, brokers, or assists with puppies bred by another person, that relationship must be clearly represented to the buyer.

When a broker, trainer, consultant, placement service, or other third-party representative is involved, buyers have the right to know who bred the puppy and to speak directly with the breeder before making a financial commitment.

Breeders agree to communicate clearly about pricing, deposits, payment terms, timelines, puppy availability, registration status, breeding rights, and any limitations or expectations that affect the buyer’s purchase.

12. Retirement, Rehoming & End-of-Life Responsibility

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to make thoughtful plans for dogs after their breeding years are complete.

Retired dogs may remain with the breeder or be placed thoughtfully in a home. Breeders agree to make retirement and rehoming decisions with the dog’s best interest in mind, not simply convenience.

Breeders agree to consider the dog’s temperament, attachment, age, health, adaptability, and quality of life when making retirement decisions.

An Honest Dog Breeder also accepts the responsibility of humane end-of-life decisions when needed. Dogs should not be allowed to suffer unnecessarily because a decision is emotionally difficult.

13. Financial Solvency & Sustainability

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to manage their program in a way that supports the proper care of their dogs.

Breeding programs require food, facilities, veterinary care, health testing, equipment, sanitation, emergency funds, buyer support, and time.

Breeders agree to build financially solvent and sustainable programs that allow them to provide consistent care, improve facilities, seek veterinary help when needed, invest in education, support buyers, and remain available for the dogs they produce.

14. Emergency Planning & Risk Management

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to consider foreseeable risks and prepare accordingly.

This may include plans for power outages, extreme weather, illness, injury, whelping complications, evacuation, disease exposure, caregiver absence, financial emergencies, and situations where the breeder is temporarily unable to care for the dogs.

15. Buyer Support After Placement

Certified Honest Dog Breeders agree to provide reasonable support after puppies go home.

Breeders agree to provide guidance that helps buyers understand the puppy’s needs, establish realistic expectations, and navigate common challenges.

An Honest Dog Breeder agrees to remain available to their puppy buyers for the life of the dog.

16. Continuing Education & Improvement

Certified Honest Dog Breeders understand that breeding involves live animals, real families, changing environments, and an ever-evolving understanding of dogs, genetics, behavior, health, and husbandry.

Problems may arise even in thoughtful, well-managed breeding programs. Honest breeders approach those problems with curiosity, responsibility, and a willingness to learn.

An Honest Dog Breeder agrees to maintain a mindset of continuing education, refinement, and improvement.

Core Commitment

A Certified Honest Dog Breeder agrees to breed with intention, raise with care, place with discernment, communicate with honesty, and remain responsible for the dogs they produce.

The goal is to build breeding programs that produce healthy, stable, well-matched dogs; support families with honesty and clarity; and allow breeders to continue doing this work with integrity, sustainability, and pride.

Standards Appeal Process

If a breeder chooses to bypass or modify one of the stated standards, they must apply for a standards appeal. The appeal must explain which standard they are requesting to bypass or modify, their reasoning, and how their alternative approach still protects the well-being of the dogs, the puppies, and the buyers.

If the appeal is approved, the breeder may remain certified, but the approved appeal will be documented with their certification listing in the directory. The directory note will include the standard involved and the breeder’s reasoning, so buyers can understand the decision clearly.

The appeal process is not intended to weaken the standards. It exists to allow for thoughtful, well-reasoned exceptions while preserving transparency and buyer trust.
